I will never forget the overwhelming temptation to throw in the towel during a grueling five-mile race. Your lungs burn, your legs turn to lead, and every muscle in your body screams at you to just stop walking, step off the track, and give up.
In our spiritual lives, many of us hit that exact same wall. The pressures of life, the weight of our failures, and the exhaustion of fighting the same battles can make us want to quit the race entirely. But the writer of Hebrews offers a powerful, urgent blueprint for spiritual endurance.
If you are on the verge of giving up today, here are three essential keys to staying in the race.
1. Fix Our Eyes On Jesus
When we start to stumble in our faith, it is almost always a perspective problem. Look at the instruction we are given in scripture:
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.” — Hebrews 12:1-2a NLT
To run effectively, we have to strip off the unnecessary weights and sins that slow us down. How do we do that? We do it by drawing close to Jesus, confessing our faults, and actively turning away from them. Scripture promises that if we confess our sins, He is completely faithful to forgive us and cleanse us from all wickedness.
When we feel weary and heavily burdened, Jesus extends an open invitation: “Come to me… and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28 NLT). His yoke is easy to bear, and His burden is light.
The enemy desperately wants your eyes fixed on your failures, your sins, and your impossible circumstances because he knows that gaze leads down a destructive path. It reminds me of a vital lesson my sports coach used to drill into me during intense training:
“Eyes up, Kubus! Eyes up!”
To every believer running their spiritual race today: Eyes up! Fix your gaze on the King and Champion of our faith, the One who holds all authority in heaven and on earth. Stop staring at Satan’s lies and deceptions, and lock your eyes on the One who brings truth and life to your soul.
2. Embrace Trials and Discipline
When hardships come, our immediate reaction is often to ask, “Why is God punishing me?” But the New Testament reframes our struggles beautifully:
“Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people; then you won’t become weary and give up… My child, don’t make light of the Lord’s discipline, and don’t give up when he corrects you. For the LORD disciplines those he loves…” — Hebrews 12:3, 5b-6a NLT
We need to understand that in God’s kingdom, discipline equals training. Trials are not a sign of God’s absence; they are the ultimate training ground for our spiritual development. If the Lord has allowed a difficult trial in your life, He has done so out of pure love. He wants to see your faith grow stronger so that you are fully equipped to do the unique work He has designed for you to do.
Predictably, the enemy will try to use your trial to discourage you and convince you to quit. You have to make a conscious choice about whose voice you will listen to and trust.
Enduring hardship is part of the calling. If Christ was able to endure the absolute agony and trial of the cross because of the joy on the other side, take comfort in knowing that He will give you the exact supernatural strength you need to endure to the other side of your current trial.
3. Get A Grip
There comes a moment in the race where you have to stop drifting, stop feeling sorry for yourself, and make a firm decision to stand your ground.
“So take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen your weak knees. Mark out a straight path for your feet so that those who are weak and lame will not fall but become strong.” — Hebrews 12:12-13 NLT
To “get a grip” means to hold fast to the unchanging truth of God’s Word and the distinct vision He has placed in your heart.
When your knees feel weak from life’s exhaustion, how do you strengthen them? You get on them. We find our strength by dropping to our knees in intentional prayer and raw worship of Jesus.
Purpose in your heart today that you will continue to follow the path of righteousness, no matter how steep the hill becomes. Remember, you aren’t just running for yourself. By setting an unwavering example of endurance, your perseverance will be the very thing that encourages someone else who feels like quitting to stay in the race.
A Prayer for the Weary Runner
If you are reading this and feel like throwing your hands up in surrender, know that you are not alone, and your race is far from over.
Lord, I pray for every person reading this who feels utterly exhausted and ready to quit. Strip away the heavy weights of sin and circumstance that are holding them down. Lift their chin, Lord—Eyes Up!—so they can see Jesus clearly. Give them the supernatural endurance to view their trials as divine training, to get a fresh grip on Your truth, and to run across the finish line with strength. Amen.
From Insecurity to Confidence: Trusting God’s Call
Insecurity is a complex psychological state that many of us know all too well. It is characterized by a persistent lack of confidence, deep self-doubt, and feelings of vulnerability. Whether it stems from past experiences, social conditioning, negative self-talk, or even underlying pride, insecurity has a way of paralyzing us. It manifests in our lives…
A Spiritual Legacy: Lessons from Joshua
There is a classic story told by Rus Lawson about a young pastor in Ohio who worked at a feed processing plant to make ends meet. Every night when he arrived home, covered in the heavy residue from the mill, his young boys would look up at him and say, “Boy, Dad, you sure are…
Part 3: No Compromise: Standing Tall in a Culture of Confusion
We live in a world that loves the word “coexist.” You see the bumper stickers everywhere, blending symbols of different worldviews and religions into one message: All paths lead to heaven, so let’s just compromise on our core beliefs to keep the peace. Scripture explicitly commands us to love our neighbors and pray for our…
