There is a story about a little girl who came home from Sunday school after learning Matthew 5:16: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Intrigued, she asked her mom what it meant. Her mother explained, “Well, it means that when you are good, kind, thoughtful, and obedient, you are letting Christ’s light shine in your life before all who know you.”

The very next week, the little girl got into a major clash with another student, causing such an uproar that the teacher had to call her mother in to settle her down. Her mother, concerned, looked at her and said, “Sweetie, don’t you remember about letting your light shine for the Lord before men?”

The girl bluntly blurted out, “Mom, I have blowed myself out.”

It’s a cute story, but it carries a heavy reality. According to a study by the Barna Group and USA Today, a staggering 75% of Christian young people fall away from their faith and leave the church after high school. While that statistic is incredibly alarming, Scripture provides us with key insights on how we can prevent ourselves from “blowing out” our light.

Whether you are graduating from high school, college, or simply moving into a brand-new season of life, remember this: You graduate from seasons, but you don’t graduate from Him.

In Colossians 2:1-10, the Apostle Paul shares three foundational steps to ensure your light keeps burning brightly, no matter what changes around you.

1. Stay the Course

“And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him.” > — Colossians 2:6 (NLT)

Paul points out an important truth: there was a specific moment when these believers accepted Jesus Christ as Lord. But accepting Him is only the beginning. The critical question we must ask ourselves daily is: Have I made a daily decision to follow Him?

Saying yes to Jesus is not just a one-time historical decision you look back on; it is an everyday choice. When you enter a new environment, new schedule, or new social circle, your past choices won’t carry today’s faith. You have to wake up every single morning and decide to stay the course.

2. Establish a Lasting Relationship

“Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” > — Colossians 2:7 (NLT)

To consistently choose Jesus, your relationship with Him cannot be superficial. Paul uses two powerful metaphors here: deep roots and a strong foundation.

• Deep Roots: In nature, roots act as an anchor to keep a plant firmly in place. More importantly, they are the plant’s lifeline—it’s how they draw the water and vital nutrients needed to survive.
• A Strong Foundation: The foundation of a house entirely determines whether or not the building will continue to stand when external pressures hit.

If your spiritual roots and foundation are shallow, you will not survive the inevitable storms of life. Shallowness tricks you into thinking you can handle the journey entirely on your own strength.

Jesus directly warned about this in Matthew 7, comparing a wise person who builds on solid bedrock to a foolish person who builds on shifting sand. When the torrents hit, the shallow house collapses with a mighty crash. He echoed this in John 15, reminding us that He is the vine and we are the branches. Separated from the vine, a branch cannot produce fruit; it simply withers and dies.

As you transition into new phases of life, never succumb to the temptation that you have “arrived” and can somehow graduate from relying on Christ.

3. Don’t Get Captured

“Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.” > — Colossians 2:8 (NLT)

The moment you step into a new environment, the world and its spiritual forces will do everything possible to capture your heart, mind, and soul. They will attempt to convince you that your faith in Christ is nothing more than a foolish lie.

How do you prevent yourself from getting tangled up in these empty worldly philosophies? You use the Sword of the Spirit—the Word of God.

His Word slices right through those cultural vines. As 2 Corinthians 10 tells us, we do not wage war using worldly weapons. We use God’s mighty weapons to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning, destroy false arguments, and capture every rebellious thought to teach it to obey Christ. If you do not know the truth of God’s Word, you won’t even realize when your mind is being taken captive.

The Choice of the Road Ahead

In the classic allegory The Pilgrim’s Progress, John Bunyan wrote poetry that perfectly encapsulates the Christian journey:

“This hill, though high, I covet to ascend;

The difficulty will not me offend.

For I perceive the way to life lies here.

Come, pluck up, heart; let’s neither faint nor fear.

Better, though difficult, the right way to go,

Than wrong, though easy, where the end is woe.”

It is incredibly tempting to walk the “easy path” of the culture around us. But Jesus explicitly laid out the reality of our options in Matthew 7:13-14. The highway to hell is broad, its gate is wide, and many choose it because it requires zero effort. But the gateway to true life is very narrow, the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.

As you step forward today, make the firm commitment to stay the course, anchor your roots deep into Jesus, and refuse to let the deceptive philosophies of this world capture your soul. Keep your eyes on Him, and don’t blow your light out.
