It’s one thing to say we believe the Bible; it’s another to stand firm when a skeptic tells you, “The Bible is just another book written by men,” or “There’s no actual historical evidence that Jesus existed.”
To build a bold faith, you need to know that your beliefs are not based on fairy tales. We serve a God of truth, and history itself backs up His Word.
The Uniqueness of Scripture
The Bible isn’t just a regular book. It is a literary miracle:
- Written over a 1,500-year span.
- Penned by more than 40 different authors (ranging from kings and military leaders to fishermen and tax collectors).
- Written across three continents (Asia, Africa, and Europe) and in three languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek).
Yet, despite this massive diversity, it tells one seamless story with one leading character: Jesus Christ. As theologian Lewis S. Chafer perfectly put it: “The Bible is not such a book a man would write if he could, or could write if he would.”
Voices from Outside the Church
You don’t just have to take the Bible’s word for it. History is packed with secular, non-Christian, and even anti-Christian sources that validate the life and death of Jesus:
- Cornelius Tacitus (Roman Historian): Recorded that “Christus” was put to death by Pontius Pilate during the reign of Tiberius.
- Thallus (Mediterranean Historian): Wrote about the strange, sudden darkness that covered the earth while Jesus hung on the cross.
- The Babylonian Talmud (Jewish Text): Documents that Jesus was “hanged on the eve of Passover.”
- Flavius Josephus (Jewish Historian): Explicitly wrote about Jesus as a wise teacher who performed wonderful works, was condemned to the cross by Pilate, and appeared alive again on the third day.
When people try to tell you the Resurrection is a hoax, or that Jesus simply “swooned” (fainted) on the cross, history laughs. Roman soldiers perfected crucifixion—no one survived it. The truth stands immovable.
Personal Questions for Reflection
- Have you ever felt intimidated by intellectual objections to Christianity? How does knowing that secular history validates Jesus change your confidence?
- If the Bible has survived thousands of years of heavy persecution and criticism, how should that impact the priority you give to reading it every day?
Call to Action
Equip your mind this week. Pick up a solid apologetics resource to deepen your roots. We highly recommend The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel or The New Evidence That Demands a Verdict by Josh McDowell to help give you the tools to give a defense for what you believe.
Stay Tuned for Part 3: Having historical facts is great, but how do we live out this truth in a world that demands compromise? Next week, we’re tackling the toughest cultural questions of our day: the trap of the “Coexist” movement and why a good God allows evil to exist. Get ready to stand tall!
Armed with the Truth: Who is the Real Jesus?
Too many people in our culture try to reinvent Jesus to fit their own agendas. They paint Him as a businessman, a political figure, or a social activist. But if we are going to boldly fight for the truth of Jesus Christ, we have to know the True Jesus Christ. In 1 Timothy 6:20-21, Paul…
Dear 12 Year Old Me
Dear Twelve Year Old Me, Almost twenty years have past, and a lot has changed. There are somethings, however, that have not. Many of our dreams still keep me up late at night, but so do the nightmares. I think it’s time we have a fire side chat, just you and me, because I need…
